University of the Witwatersrand  ·  Semester 1 & 2  ·  2026

Master the maths
Wits demands of you.

Semester 1 exams are approaching. The jump from matric to first-year university mathematics is steeper than most students expect. It hits in Week 2. UMM closes the gap — with distinction-led live workshops mapped precisely to your Wits module, distinction-level moderation 7 days a week, and past-paper-mapped sessions built around what Wits’s examiners actually test.

The curriculum

Five core modules.
Every Wits STEM programme.

Every UMM Wits workshop is mapped to Wits’s published first-year STEM syllabus — not generic university mathematics. Five core Wits modules. All high-stakes. Every session built around what Wits’s examiners actually test. Each module includes 8 live distinction-level workshops per month, plus full Academic Community access with distinction-level moderation 7 days a week.

Built for Wits’s STEM faculties

Designed for FEBE, Science & EMS.
Not generic maths.

UMM Wits is built specifically for students in Wits’s two major STEM faculties — the Faculty of Engineering, Built Environment & Information Technology (FEBE) and the Faculty of Natural & Agricultural Sciences (Science). Every workshop is mapped to the module your examiner wrote, not a generic university syllabus. Our facilitators are Wits Honours and Masters graduates who have sat the same Witsies papers your students are writing.

The experience

Live. Rigorous.
distinction-led.

Not pre-recorded video. Not passive content. Every workshop is a 60-minute, past-paper-mapped session led by a distinction-level STEM specialist who knows your Wits module — followed by distinction-level moderation in the UMM Academic Community 7 days a week. Questions posted overnight answered by 9am the following morning.

Why UMM is different

Not a tutoring service.
An academic community.

Most supplementary learning is passive, generic and disconnected from your actual degree. UMM is built around Wits’s real syllabi, live distinction-level expertise, and a moderated peer community that learns together. The students who pass WTW 114 are not those who studied harder — they are those who understood it differently.

UMM Academic Community
distinction-level STEM facilitators mapped to Wits’s actual WTW, STK and WST syllabi
8 live workshops per module per month — active problem-solving, not lecture replay
distinction-level moderation 7 days a week — overnight questions answered by 9am
Peer cohort of Wits STEM students — shared struggle, cross-fertilisation of ideas
Module-specific forums with searchable expert worked solutions and full thread history
Full session recordings available immediately after every workshop
Generic tutoring / pre-recorded platforms
Generic university maths — not mapped to any specific institution’s modules
Pre-recorded video — no interaction, no real-time problem-solving
Email or WhatsApp support — responses measured in hours or days
Individual tutoring — no peer community, no shared learning environment
No moderated forum — students isolated when stuck outside sessions
Recordings gated or unavailable after the trial period

Group learning

Where shared struggle becomes
shared mastery.

The students who thrive at Wits are rarely those who study in isolation. The UMM Academic Community creates the conditions for cross-fertilisation of ideas — a cohort of first-years learning the same MATH modules, supported by the same facilitator team, growing together through the same exam pressures.

01
Cross-programme cohorts
Engineers, mathematicians, physicists and computer scientists all face the same first-year MATH challenges from different angles. Shared forums accelerate understanding in ways no individual tutoring session can replicate.
02
expert-authored worked solutions
Every question posted receives a response from a distinction-level STEM specialist — not a peer, not an automated system. Written to be searched and reused by every student in the cohort.
03
Ideas that bloom across modules
An engineering student’s question about WTW 114 integration illuminates a method a physics student hadn’t considered. A maths student’s rigorous approach helps an engineer understand why their WTW 158 answer diverged.

Academic team

A hybrid team built for
depth and reach.

UMM brings together three tiers of academic expertise — Senior STEM graduates with substantial teaching records, Masters candidates embedded in South Africa’s research environment, and Honours graduates who recently navigated the same first-year transition your students face now. A fourth tier of undergraduate peer moderators, supervised by the academic team, supports the community forum.

Common questions

Everything you need
to decide.

If your question is not answered here, WhatsApp us on WhatsApp Business: +27 61 009 5548 and we will respond within the hour.

What happens if I miss a live session?
Every session is recorded and made available immediately after it ends. You can rewatch at any time. Missing a live session does not mean missing the content — though live attendance is weighted 10× on the leaderboard.
How does the 7-days-a-day, 7-days-a-week moderation work?
Post your question to your module forum in the UMM Academic Community at any time. Moderators are active 7 days a week. Questions posted overnight are answered by 9am the following morning.
How are the workshops structured?
Every 60-minute workshop follows our four-phase method: 10 minutes Anatomy (examiner patterns), 15 minutes Drill (live worked solutions), 25 minutes Close (you solve, we mark), 10 minutes Open Forum (your questions answered live).
Can I cancel my subscription?
Yes, at any time. There is no lock-in beyond the current billing month. You have a 14-day cancellation right from the date of your first payment.
Is UMM affiliated with the University of the Witwatersrand?
No. UMM is an independent academic support service. All module references are based on publicly available Wits course information. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to the University of the Witwatersrand.
Which modules are live right now?
MATH1036A, MATH1042A, MATH1034A, STAT1003 and STAT1006 are all live now. All five modules are live now. Secure your seat today.
